Goals For 2017

It’s that time of year again when we all swear the next 12 months are going to be the best of our lives. I’m not really a huge fan of new year’s resolutions because they tend to be very vague and therefore harder to achieve. So instead, I create a list of more specific goals multiple times a year- being SPECIFIC is what makes things happen. Anyone who knows me knows that when I’m determined to do something, I will find a way to make sure it happens. Here is a shortened version of the (most important) goals that I set last week:

Get my first freelance writing job

I’ve never really made serious career goals before but 2016 has made me wake up big time. I realised that my “shit jobs” weren’t the problem. The problem is being told what to do with my time and spending most of it doing things that don’t really matter. And recently when I was looking through all of the stories and books I wrote as a child, I realised that I totally gave up on my dream of writing because it’s unrealistic (I hate that word). I know freelance writing is really hard to get into but if you never try you’ll never know. I am more determined than ever to make working for myself happen. I’ve set a goal to be making some money for myself by the end of March, even if it’s a tiny amount.

Find or create a job with flexible/remote working

I can’t really be very specific with this one as I have no idea where my writing will lead me to. I’m very open-minded about it all and don’t want to limit myself. If I can find or create a job that I enjoy and can take on the road with me, I will be a very happy girl.

Take time to do something I love every day

I’ve set this goal before but nothing ever came of it- I was too vague and I didn’t even know what I loved. I want to bake more, create more art, go on more adventures and spend more time in nature. My goal is to get into the habit of making some time each day to make myself happy- even if it’s just as simple as having a bubble bath or having a cup of tea.

Post on my blog at least once a week

When I first created my blog a few months ago I was super motivated and was posting very frequently until I hit a brick wall and didn’t know what to write about. I also felt kind of scared to be completely open in my posts once I started sharing them to my friends and family. Now that I have revamped my website, I am feeling motivated and can’t wait to share more of my travel stories!

Go back to Canada

I still have 18 months left of my working holiday visa in Canada which I don’t want to waste- especially considering how lucky I was to even get it. This time I intend to live somewhere in British Columbia but I’m still trying to figure out a plan. I will definitely be going back more prepared than I was last time. However, I don’t want to put a huge amount of pressure on myself. My goal is to go back for even just a month or two and take it from there.

Visit a country I’ve never been to

Cuba and Brazil are on my mind. Pray for my bank account.

Be kinder

I went through a phase a few years ago of doing a “random act of kindness” every day. It felt great. And it’s my goal to start consciously doing this again. Smiling at a stranger, giving someone a compliment, leaving a big tip, being courteous on the road… nothing outrageous. But I just want to make sure to take time to try and make other people’s day a tiny bit better.

Have more fun with exercise 

In the last 12 months I haven’t made much progress in terms of fitness. I’ve been a bit all over the place. I was too focused on getting stronger and leaner and I began to dread working out. But a few weeks ago I started practicing handstands at the gym and had so much fun- I actually enjoyed exercising. My goal is to forget about numbers and aesthetics, try new things and just enjoy moving my body.

Get into a habit of meditating every day

I’ve meditated before but never on a consistent basis. It’s so good for mental health and I feel calmer every time I do it but it’s hard to unplug sometimes. My goal is to meditate once a day for any amount of time, even if it’s just spending 5 minutes appreciating a pretty sunrise.

Lower my expectations

One thing I’ve been learning lately is that expectations really are the cause of all suffering (thanks, Buddha). Anytime I’ve been disappointed or angry it’s because things have gone differently to how I expected. While my goals may be considered expectations, I will continue to work towards them with an extremely open mind. If things don’t go as planned, I know everything will work out in a different (and probably unexpected) way.

So that’s my  list for the next few months and I’m super excited to see how it all unfolds. What do you want to achieve this year? Whatever your goals are, I hope you smash them.
